This past April at the Theater an der Wien, Bejun Mehta sang the title role of Oberon in Damiano Michieletto’s new production of Benjamin Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Under the baton of Antonello Manacorda with the Wiener Symphoniker, the notable cast included Daniela Fally as Tytania, Maresi Riegner as Puck, Günes Gürle as Theseus, Ann-Beth Solvang as Hippolyta, Rupert Charlesworth as Lysander, Tobias Greenhalgh as Demetrius, Natalia Kawalek as Hermia, Mirella Hagen as Helena, Tareq Nazmi as Nick Bottom, and Lukas Jakobski as Peter Quince.

A signature role for Bejun, the use of face masks and innovative theatrical cosmetics magnified the fantastical elements of the story, and gave extraordinary depth to his already seasoned portrayal:

“Top marks for the well-known but always sensational Bejun Mehta as Oberon.” –Alberto Mattioli, La Stampa

“Above all Bejun Mehta as Oberon, who masters the great challenge of the countertenor role with the same ease as he strews his orange magic powder.” –Reinhard Kager, FAZ

“For this we must praise the protagonists, especially the Oberon of Bejun Mehta, still one of the world’s best countertenors.” –Helmut Mauró, Süddeutsche Zeitung

“The countertenor Bejun Mehta is an Oberon of international standing, who sings this role gorgeously and with intense characterization.” –Peter Jarolin, Kurier
